Years ago, when I was working temporary contracts in payroll and accounting, I completed a one‑year assignment where I earned performance ratings of 99% accuracy. Three weeks later, I was suddenly fired for “too many mistakes.” I was shocked. My confidence collapsed overnight.
A few days later, my doctor sent me to the emergency room during the SARS epidemic. After several tests, the medical team discovered I was bleeding internally. The lack of oxygen to my brain had affected my accuracy — something I had no way of knowing at the time.
When I returned home from the hospital, I remember sitting quietly and thinking, If I can’t work in payroll or accounting anymore, who am I? I felt a deep loss of identity.
I turned to career counseling, searching for direction. Becoming a career coach appeared only in the grey zone of my assessment results — not a clear “top choice.” Even my counselor doubted it. But something in me said, Try.
Twenty‑three years later, that “grey zone” choice became the work that defines my purpose.
Reclaiming My Identity
Recently, I caught myself slipping into a story about being a seventy‑five‑year‑old woman with fragile health. January brought a chest infection, asthma complications, and then food poisoning — a double blow to my body. I started to see myself through the lens of weakness.
Then, over the last few days, I watched Tony Robbins’ Time to Rise series. He spoke about identity — how it’s shaped by our beliefs, our actions, and even our physiology. He challenged us to rewrite the stories that limit us.
His message landed deeply.
I realized my identity is not tied to a job title. It’s rooted in my values, my purpose, and the life I choose to create.
My New Story
My new identity is grounded in strength, wisdom, and contribution.
- I stand firmly in my belief that my coaching helps people move forward in their careers.
- I choose to enjoy life on my terms — prioritizing my health, my joy, and the people I love.
- I embrace my expertise as a career counselor and coach.
- I am a winner in life, not because everything has been easy, but because I continue to rise.
- I carry decades of wisdom that can help others navigate their own transitions.
- Retirement is not in my story — impact is.
I am here to help many more individuals step into their next chapter with confidence, clarity, and hope.
