🎧 The Power of Listening
Throughout my career as a career coach and consultant, I’ve been amazed by how openly clients share their stories—often deeply personal, sometimes painful. I’ve worked with individuals re-entering the workforce after years in federal prison. They told me about their pasts, sometimes in more detail than I expected. But I listened. Because I believe in people’s capacity to grow, to contribute, and to start again.
I’ve always been a listener. And I’ve always believed that everyone has something they can do extremely well.
🔍 Coaching in Action: A Day in My Life
- This morning, I met with a client who was clear about what he doesn’t do well. I gently redirected him: “Let’s focus on what you can do. Everyone has a strength worth building on.” By our second meeting, after exploring what he enjoyed in his past role, I suggested a job title—and found a company hiring for a similar position. I encouraged him to research the company to see if it aligned with his career vision.
- Later, I spoke with a potential client who said, “I know your coaching will help me land my next role.” Now we’re in the waiting game—seeing how my services can fit his budget. Pricing is one of the hardest parts of being self-employed, but conversations like this remind me of the value I bring.
- Then came a call from a retired gentleman looking to supplement his pension. After listening to his story, I identified opportunities that aligned with his past experience—helping him see new possibilities.
