I believe as we get older we acquire more skills, knowledge and interpersonal skills. Many old workers are not aware of their wealth of information they possess in their heads.  I remember I heard a HR manager mention as their company’s employees were getting to retire how could they transfer their knowledge to the younger workers.

I also realize that we often have many fears of moving our career ahead because we do not know the future. We don’t know if people will like us, will I be able to do the job and most common no one will hire me because of my age.

My journey in trying to find my true career has taken many steps as I got my BA in psychology and then a Social Service Worker diploma when I was in my twenties determined I would change the world. That did not happen as I got married to my first husband and we had one daughter. Twenty years later, I made the decision to leave that relationship and I ended up going back to school taking a Business Administration program at a private college to support myself and my daughter at this time I was in my mid 40’s.  One job that impacted me was I worked on a contract job at 3M in their payroll department and started taking more course to become a payroll manager. I was one course away from getting my certification to become a payroll manager when my health took a turn and at the age of 52 now I am looking at another career as an Employment Coach. In 2012, I have been laid off as the government decided there was too many employment counsellors. Now I am early my early 60;s and I do not want to retire, I decided to open my own career coaching services.

If you ask me, age is not a factor in changing jobs or a career. It is all career satisfaction, job security and work -life balance.
